Currently, the UK alone records an estimated 300 vehicle fires each day. This figure includes manufacturing defects, arson, poor servicing or modification and a variety of other reasons. After receiving instructions from loss adjusters, solicitors and fleets, my role is to examine each case to accurately determine the specific cause and, if required, assist with liability and the subsequent recovery of costs.
The usual scope of an investigation is: -
Initially review each case to determine if further investigation is viable or necessary. In some cases, images are all that is necessary to accurately give an opinion of fire causation. If further investigation is requested, the usual procedure, aligned with CPR35 or NFPA 921, is as follows.
1. Desk review each case to ensure causation can be established.
2. Interview the owner/driver. Check service history and determine if there are any modifications to the vehicle which may have caused the failure.
3. Establish the full supply chain, including the manufacturer, supplier, operator, and, if required, end-user, to schedule an intrusive joint investigation.
4. Forensically investigate the vehicle and agree the cause with the supporting engineers at the time of investigation.
5. For completeness, I can, if required, further examine any field service actions/recalls that would confirm that the manufacturer is aware of an issue.
6. Submit a full report or summary conclusion to the instructing party that concisely determines the cause of the failure.
7. Attend court as an expert witness, if required.
